| On September 29, 2005, Chinese Ambassador Wu Hongbo paid a farewell call on Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Amb. Wu thanked President Arroyo for her consistent efforts in promoting China-Philippines amicable relations for many years. Wu said that he was so proud to have witnessed the fast development in bilateral relations during his tour of duty in the Philippines. The bilateral relations are highlighted by frequent high level visits, enhanced political trust, fruitful trade and economic cooperation and closer cultural exchanges. Wu also pledged that he would continue to contribute to the Sino-Philippine friendship in the future.
"We're very sorry to see you go, but congratulations for the good work that you have done to strengthen the relations of your country to the Philippines," President Arroyo said. She thanked Amb. Wu for his support and wished him well upon his return to the Foreign Ministry of China. President Arroyo also expressed her satisfaction with the rapid development of Philippines-China relations. She expressed optimism that the amicable ties and cooperation between the two countries would develop continuously and vigorously in the years ahead.
During the call, President Arroyo conferred the Order of Sikatuna, rank of Datu (Grand Cross) award on Ambassador Wu. This is the highest award conferrable by the Philippine Government upon a foreign diplomat.
