Charge d'Affaires Sun Yi Addresses The 12th China-ASEAN Forum on Social Development and Poverty Reduction

On 27 June 2018,the China State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development and the National Anti-Poverty Commission of the Philippines jointly opened the 12th China-ASEAN Forum on Social Development and Poverty Reduction at PICC in Manila. The Forum is also supported by the ASEAN Secretariat,UNDP and ADB. Charge d'Affaires Sun Yi of the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines was invited to attend the event.

 

Sun said in his remarks that during the past four decades of reform and opening-up, the Chinese government has successfully lifted over 700 million people out of poverty, and is now advancing the targeted poverty alleviation policy in a purpose of completely eradicating poverty and building a moderately prosperous society by 2020. Poverty alleviation has been an outstanding cooperation area between China and ASEAN. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the strategic partnership between China and ASEAN. Both sides are now formulating the 2030 Vision for China-ASEAN Strategic Partnership and upgrading the "2+7 cooperation framework" to "3+X cooperation framework", which will translate the visions into concrete anti-poverty actions under bilateral and regional mechanisms to forge a balanced and inclusive regional development.

 

Sun also mentioned that, powered by a greater mutual trust, the China-Philippines relations are currently enjoying a sound momentum of growth and entering into a Golden Era, which in turn speeds up the practical cooperation across the board. China is now extending a helping hand to the Philippines in agriculture and fishery modernization, small-scale rural infrastructure and transportation schemes, climate change and disaster prevention, and rural livelihood programs covering drinking water, elementary education and nutrition. China is ready to expand the aforesaid cooperation with the Philippine side, and explore new poverty alleviation approaches in areas such as e-commerce and shanty town transformations. Looking ahead, China and the Philippines shall enhance anti-poverty experience sharing and capacity building,and infuse more energy into the China-ASEAN poverty alleviation cooperation in the future .

 

Themed"Enhancing Poverty Reduction Partnership for an Asean-China Community with a Shared Future", the Forum was also attended by dignitaries including Vice Minister Chen Zhigang of China State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development,Secretary Liza Maza of the National Anti-Poverty Commission of the Philippines, Undersecretary Ernesto Abella of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Philippines, Deputy Secretary General Mochthan of the ASEAN Secretariat, ADB Vice-President Stephen Groff, Deputy Minister Hla Kyaw for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation of Myanmar and Secretary of State Sao Chivoan of Ministry of Rural Development of Cambodia.
